The DFG research project “Contextualising the Typographia Medicea” is a cooperation between the Institut für Kunstgeschichte of the University of Würzburg and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence (Max Planck-Institut). We invite applications for a two-year PhD fellowship to a researcher holding a MA in book history, general history or art history of the Early Modern era. Archival research experience, an excellent command of Italian and basic knowledge of Latin are required.

Basing his/her research on the preserved archival documents of the Typographia Medicea, the first publishing house with a large-scale production of books printed in oriental characters, the successful candidate will prepare a doctoral thesis on the economic and logistical aspects of the Typographia Medicea and its position within the European market for printed books around 1600. The PhD thesis will be guided by Prof. Dr. Eckhard Leuschner (University of Würzburg, art history) and Prof. Dr. Ursula Rautenberg (University of Erlangen, book history).

The fellowship stipend rate is 1500 Euros per month for two years, starting 01 April 2015.
